You're reading: Regions Party blocking parliament, in talks with communists

A thirty-minute break has been announced in the Ukrainian parliament at the request of the Regions Party and the Communist Party in order to hold a conciliatory council meeting.

Vice Speaker Mykola Tomenko, who is chairing an emergency meeting on
Friday, said that the two factions had requested the break to agree
their positions.

Regions Party MPs then blocked the parliament’s rostrum and presidium shortly after the break was announced.

The parliament adopted two laws during its meeting and postponed the
consideration of a new wording of the Budget Code with presidential
proposals, as the budget committee had taken no decision on the
document.

MPs also rejected a bill amending the Land Code of Ukraine.

As reported, the opening of the Verkhovna Rada’s emergency meeting on Friday was delayed.

Regions Party MP Vladyslav Lukianov said before the meeting:
“There’s no point in blocking the rostrum, because the parliament’s
leadership is absent in Kyiv today.” He also said that Verkhovna Rada
Chairman Volodymyr Lytvyn was currently in Kirovohrad, his first deputy
Oleksandr Lavrynovych was on sick leave, while Vice Speaker Mykola
Tomenko was in Crimea.

However, Tomenko returned from Crimea and opened the parliament meeting on Friday.
