The chairman of the Regions Party faction in Ukraine's parliament, Oleksandr Yefremov, has said that the new Criminal Procedure Code will be adopted at second reading this week, the Regions Party's press service reported.

During a conciliatory council of leaders of the factions and committees of the Verkhovna Rada on Monday, Yefremov said that the second reading of the bill is scheduled for Tuesday, April 10.

"We have to consider around 4,000 amendments. And if we do not have time to view all the amendments, it is possible that we will continue consideration of the Criminal Procedure Code on Wednesday. It is a very important document and it should be adopted this week," he said.

The politician added that the European Union was positive about the Ukrainian government’s work to reform the Criminal Procedure Code.

"We’ve received a letter from the leaders of the European Union, Mrs Ashton (EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton) and Mr Fule (EU Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighborhood Policy Stefan Fule). They are very positive about the work of the current government on preparing the Criminal Procedure Code. They hope that in the same way, we will work to amend the constitution. In particular, they hope for consolidated work of the opposition and the authorities on the amendment of the constitution and in the frames of the Constitutional Assembly," Yefremov said.

He also added that copies of this letter would be handed to all members of the Verkhovna Rada so that they can learn the views of the EU leaders.
