Russia and Ukraine expect to draw up an intergovernmental agreement on completing the construction of power units 3 and 4 of the Khmelnytsky nuclear power plant by the end of September, the Russian nuclear power equipment and service export monopoly Atomstroyexport, which is bidding for the general contract, said in a statement.
Russia and Ukraine held negotiations on the completion of the
Khmelnytsky Nuclear Power Plant in Moscow at the end of August. The
parties agreed to start coordinating the intergovernmental agreement
between various agencies in both Russia and Ukraine in early October.
Russia believes Atomstroyexport’s full responsibility for the
project, with the right to invite subcontractors independently, would
be the most optimal way to implement it.
Ukraine announced an international tender to select a type of
reactor for power units 3 and 4 of the Khmelnytsky Nuclear Power Plant
in March 2008. In addition to Atomstroyexport, the bidders also
included the U.S.-based company Westinghouse, which withdrew from the
tender soon after it was announced, and Korea Electric Power
Corporation (KEPCO). The Ukrainian Fuel and Energy Ministry supported
the Russian project on October 13, 2009.
