You're reading: Savchenko pleads not guilty in court

Ukrainian Nadiya Savchenko denied in court her implication in a homicide, an attempted murder, or illegally crossing the Russian state border.

Savchenko pleaded not guilty when asked by the judge about her position regarding the case, an Interfax correspondent reports.

Earlier on Sept. 22, the prosecutor’s office read the indictment.

The Donetsk district court in the Rostov Oblast started on Sept. 22 to try the criminal case of Ukrainian citizen Savchenko, accused of being involved in the killing of Russian journalists in Donbas.

The defense lawyers say that the main action during the trial will begin on Sept. 29 when the interrogation of the defendant is due to take place.

The court held the pre-trial hearings on Sept. 15. The lawyers for the defense requested the court to sanction the Savchenko case being tried by three judges. The motion of the defense was upheld by the court. On the same day, the court extended, as requested by the prosecutor’s office, the term of custody for Savchenko until Jan. 16.

The Ukrainian has been in custody in Russia since her arrest in July 2014.
