The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) will make a definite response to a request from the Investigative Committee of the Russian Prosecutor's Office – Ukrainian servicemen and members of the Ukrainian National Assembly – Ukrainian National Self-Defense (UNA-UNSO) political organization did not participate in the Russian-Georgian military conflict in August 2008, as this was confirmed by numerous checks and reports from international observers.
The SBU press center said this to Interfax-Ukraine, while commenting on the submission by Ukrainian prosecutors of the request from Russia for consideration by the SBU.
The press center said that the SBU had yet to receive an official request from Russia.
“After we receive [the request], we’ll give an answer in line with the current law, and this answer will be based on the results of checks that have been recently conducted – the Ukrainians were not involved in a military conflict in South Ossetia in August last year,” the press center said.
The press center quoted SBU Chief Valentyn Nalyvaichenko as saying that statements from the Russian Prosecutor’s Office Investigative Committee were groundless, as a year ago, the SBU had informed the international community about attempts to hire Ukrainians in order to involve them in the conflict.
