You're reading: Socialists will appoint presidential candidate in September

Kyiv, August 17 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The Socialist Party of Ukraine (SPU) will make a final decision on its candidate for the post of Ukraine’s president at a congress on September 12, the party’s press service quoted party leader Oleksandr Moroz as saying at a press conference in Chernivtsi.

Moroz said that he would not run for president, because he does not consider the post of president to be the key to resolving the country’s problems.

“Social and democratic changes should currently be made in the country’s domestic and foreign policies, but this is not the president’s function. This is the function of the parliament and government,” he said.

Moroz said that he had set the strategic goal of “returning his party to parliament.”
