You're reading: Source: probable prolongation of Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty by Moscow and Washington meets Kyiv’s interests

An analysis of the current Russia-American dialogue on nuclear disarmament, including the Pentagon's latest statements on new approaches to ballistic missile defense, shows that Moscow and Washington are likely to prolong the previous Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, a high-ranking military source in Kyiv has said.

“The Pentagon’s latest statements on reviewing Iran’s nuclear
threat, and new approaches to ballistic missile defense, right up to
the possible joint operation of Russia’s radio detection and ranging
equipment in Gabala and Armavir, show that the sides are likely to
focus on working on contradictions in the current treaty and prolong
the agreement when it expires in December,” the source said.

According to the source, the prolongation of the current Strategic
Arms Reduction Treaty meets the interests of Kyiv, which has given up
its nuclear arsenal.
