Ukrainian President Victor Yushchenko is making every effort to free Ukrainian citizens from pirate captivity as soon as possible, presidential spokeswoman Iryna Vannykova said at a briefing in Kyiv on Nov. 30.

She said that talks in this connection had been held with Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, who agreed to render assistance in releasing the Ukrainians.

"Our state is an active player in international measures aimed at fighting piracy, and Ukrainian Navy ships are participating in respective measures, in particular, in the NATO-led Operation Active Endeavour," Vannykova said.

She said that the president had put forward a number of proposals on the unification of efforts between countries to combat piracy. She said that the approval of these proposals by other states, after they are properly discussed, would help secure more effective cooperation in the fight against piracy.
