Ukraine’s daylight savings time(DST) takes effect Sunday, March 30, when clocks will move forward from 4:00 to 5:00.

DST is intended to provide a better match between the hours of daylight and the active hours of work and school.

Since it allows for more efficient use of sunlight in the summer, it is also an energy conservation measure, as less electricity is used in every household.

DST was introduced in 1916 to force people to wake up an hour earlier, in response to the sun rising earlier.

Since 1996, the European Union (EU) observed DST from the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October. Previously DST was not uniform across Europe.

More than 110 countries around the world use DST.

It is generally not observed near the equator, where sunrise times do not vary enough to justify it.
