Ukraine's population is still decreasing, having dropped by 7,000 people to 46.022 million in July 2009, the State Statistics Committee has reported.
In January-July some 297,300 people were born and 427,000 died. The
birth rate is 11.1 per 1,000 people, while the death rate is 15.9 per
1,000. Some 153,060 marriages and 81,900 divorces were registered over
the period.
According to the latest population census, some 48.457 million people lived in Ukraine as of December 5, 2001.
After the population census in 2002, there were slightly more than
48 million people in Ukraine, in 2003 there were 47.62 million and by
the end of 2004 there were 47.28 million people.
Ukraine’s population was 51.94 million in late 1990, 52.06 million
in 1991, 52.24 million in 1992. Then the population started to shrink:
52.11 million people were registered in 1993, 51.73 million in 1994,
51.3 million in 1995, 50.82 million in 1996, 50.37 million in 1997,
49.92 million in 1998, 49.43 million in 1999, 48.92 million in 2000,
and 48.46 million in 2001.
