Ukraine is preparing to accept the NATO’s Standardization Agreement. Experts doubt the political and economic rationale behind this move.
The
annual national program of cooperation between Ukraine and NATО is
focused on the transition to the new standards. It has been forwarded
for coordination to various ministries and institutions. A number of
experts believe that the whole affair will be limited to just that.
Below is the commentary of Igor Shishkin, deputy director of the
Institute of CIS Countries.
I
believe that it makes no sense to attribute any special meaning to this
document. It is an old story. Ukraine has passed a number of documents
on cooperation with NATO back in Kuchma days. Then under Yuschenko there
was an attempt made to join the Membership Action Plan (MAP) for NATO.
This current document is of the same sort. But it does not mean that the
current leadership of Ukraine aims to join NATO.
