Sergiy Tigipko, the Ukrainian banker and presidential candidate, has proposed drafting a strategy for fighting drug addiction in Ukraine.
He said this during his visit to the Vybir (Choice) rehabilitation center in Poltava region, , the banker’s press service reported on Friday.
The state should take interest in this problem, not only non-governmental organization and charitable foundations, Tigipko said.
“The authorities should rehabilitate, not isolate the drug addicts,” he explained.
According to the politician, officials are consciously ignoring the problem of drug addiction at a state level.
“The evident growth of drug addiction is ignored at the state level. This is an undesirable subjecu for the authorities, as it demonstrates their reluctance to act both in social and youth politics and in healthcare,” he said.
A comprehensive approach should be adopted for treating drug addicts, their adaptation to the life in society, interaction with their families.
“Drug addicts are currently treated only with methadone. I am against it. This is a simplified approach, which won’t help full recovery,” the banker said.
Tigipko believes that Ukraine needs to launch a wide discussion of the drug addiction problem.
