You're reading: Tihipko advocates amended law on presidential elections

Ukrainian banker Serhiy Tihipko, who declared his presidential ambitions, has said that he supports the law on amendments to the law on the presidential elections in Ukraine passed by the parliament.

“This morning, I have again analyzed this legislation and haven’t found any serious flaws in it,” Tihipko stressed in an interview with the Interfax-Ukraine.

The banker said he supports shortening the election campaign from 120 to 90 days. “I believe 90 days are enough to present the candidates,” Tihipko explained.

He also supported the clause stipulating that representatives of each candidate could be present at the polling stations.

“I want to wait for the president’s remarks to see what he wants, for I might have missed something … But I like this law more than the previous one,” he added.

As reported, President Viktor Yuschenko returned the presidential election law to the Verkhovna Rada together with his proposals. At an initiative of the Bloc of Yulia Tymoshenko (BYT), the date of the Verkhovna Rada’s extraordinary meeting has been set for August 21. Representatives from the BYT and the Party of Regions stated their intention to override the president’s veto.
