Head of the EU Delegation to Ukraine Jan Tombinski has condemned an attack on LGBTI (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender/Transsexual and Intersexed) activists, who wanted to participate in the Lviv Equality Festival on March 19.

“The EU takes a principled approach towards the promotion of non-discrimination of individuals on the basis of their sexual orientation and gender identity,” a delegation’s press service reported on March 21.

“Cultural, traditional or religious values cannot be invoked to justify any form of discrimination, including the discrimination against LGBTI persons,” reads Tombinski’s statement.

As reported, the court banned Equality Festival in Lviv planned for March 19 to avoid possible conflicts since simultaneously some organizations claimed for holding the events in support of traditional Christian values.

Still festival’s organizers decided to hold it at Dniester hotel to which nearly 100 young people came later on to frustrate the festival.
