The total amount of mutual claims by Ukraine's NJSC Naftogaz Ukrainy and Russia's Gazprom lodged with the Arbitration Institute of the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce is about $50 billion, Naftogaz CEO Andriy Kobolev said.

“The total sum of both claims at Stockholm arbitration is about $50 billion,” he told Channel 5 on Wednesday evening.

In this connection he asked that comments, assessments and decisions on gas issues, including Naftogaz’s reorganization, should be made with caution, as they may negatively influence decision-making by the Arbitration Institute.

Kobolev said that under a contract with Gazprom, Naftogaz demands that the Russian company return overpaid sums for purchased gas, lower prices of gas in future and cancel the take-or-pay rule.

Naftogaz also insists that transit rates for Gazprom be reviewed along with the introduction of the pump-or-pay rule. It also wants that guaranteed annual contracted transit shipments be stipulated in a contract. Unblocking virtual gas flows with Europe and transferring the transit contract to a new operator are also on Naftogaz’s agenda of netogiations with Gazprom.

Naftogaz has already supplied all the necessary materials to the Arbitration Institute, and hearings are to begin in autumn, Kobolev said.
