You're reading: Tymoshenko slams Poroshenko’s idea of Ukraine-Russia bilateral talks

Leader of the Batkivschyna Party and presidential candidate Yulia Tymoshenko has criticized parliamentarian and presidential candidate Petro Poroshenko's idea to hold bilateral negotiations with Russia.

“I would like to stress once again that Petro Poroshenko’s address to Russia, in which he said that Russia should determine the time and the venue of the negotiations, is unacceptable. It would be wrong to pull out of the negotiating process that is being held within the EU-United States-Ukraine-Russia format,” Tymoshenko told journalists after taking part in an event commemorating the Chornobyl disaster on Saturday.

The world consolidated to help Ukraine after the Chornobyl disaster in 1986, and the EU and the United States are currently helping Ukraine resolve different problems, she said.

The dismantling of the four-sided negotiating process format would in fact lead Ukraine to “capitulation,” she said.

“I am urging Petro Poroshenko not to destroy the negotiating process existing between all participating countries and recall his proposal on switching to such incomprehensible bilateral negotiations,” she said.

It was reported earlier that, speaking at the ‘Ukraine-Russia: Dialogue’ congress in Kyiv on Friday, April 25, Poroshenko said Ukraine was open to dialogue with Russia and was willing to hold negotiations aimed at preserving peace.

“For the sake of peace, we are prepared for dialogue. I ask the Russian side to set the time and venue,” he said.
