The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry hailed Jose Manuel Barroso's re-election as president of the European Commission on Wednesday.
“We sincerely value the efficient cooperation and personal relationship that have evolved between the Ukrainian leadership and the president of the European Commission,” Deputy Foreign Minister Kostiantyn Yeliseyev told Interfax-Ukraine in Kyiv on Wednesday.
Ukraine sees Barroso as a politician who understands Ukraine and its problems, Yeliseyev said. The deputy minister pointed out Barroso’s role in seeking energy security for Ukraine and in negotiating an agreement under which the European Union has pledged to help Ukraine modernize its natural gas transmission system.
“Of course, we expect that his new [term of office] will bring along numerous new acquisitions and we hope that among them will be the signature of an innovative and ambitious agreement on association between Ukraine and the European Union,” Yeliseyev said.
Barroso is to take part in a planned EU-Ukraine summit in Kyiv on December 4, 2009.
