You're reading: Ukrainian Communists initiate referendum on vital social, political issues

The Ukrainian Communist Party launches a long-term action to hold a national referendum on a number of vital socio-political issues on May 1.

"Today, on May 1, we are initiating a lengthy campaign, a national referendum, and we will make the current administration listen to people," Ukrainian Communist Party leader Petro Symonenko told a rally in Kyiv on May 1.

Among the issues proposed for the referendum will be the question as to whether the people of Ukraine agree that the Ukrainian Constitution should prohibit the sale and purchase of farmland, Symonenko said. The referendum participants will also likely state their position on the need for the nationalization of oil and gas, mining, metallurgical, and defense enterprises, electrical power industry, and railways transport.

The referendum participants will also be asked to the state their opinion on the need to introduce a state monopoly on the sale of alcohol and tobacco products; the preservation of the current pension age for men and women, and also the preservation of the state solidary pension system.

Among the questions to be asked at the referendum is the following question: "Do you agree that Ukraine should join the Customs Union and enter the single economic space with Russia, Belarus, and Kazakhstan?"

"We are ready for a fight against the oligarchization of the government and the capitalization of relations," Symonenko said.
