Economist and diplomat Vasyl Filipchuk was detained by immigration officers in Boryspil Airport on his way to Brussels. Filipchuk was enroute to an international conference regarding the situation in Ukraine that includes EU Neighborhood Commissioner Stefan Füle, reports Ukrainska Pravda.
Immigration duty chief Vasyl Yurushynets came up to Filipchuk personally and ordered him to stay without offering any reason according to UP and twitters from Batkivshchyna correspondents.
Vasyl Filipchuk has served as spokesman and director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Department for European Integration. He also worked on the International Council headquarters for the opposition. He is also associated with a prominent independent think-tank, the Interenational Center for Policy Studies.
Civil rights activist and journalist Viktoria Syumar, herself recently under threat, noted, “Being already an expert, Filipchuk has made every effort to promote the Association Agreement with the EU in cooperation with various international organizations and embassies.”
Earlier today, the Yanukovych Administration announced that it would start looking to blame individuals within the economic ministries, which are generally not led by hard-core Party of the Regions politicians.
