A new intergovernmental agreement on the cooperation in gas sector between Russia and Ukraine may be worked out by the time of the two countries' premiers meeting scheduled for October of 2009, Fuel and Energy Minister Yuriy Prodan told reporters on Thursday.

“If we reach certain agreements on the project we will table it at a
meeting of the intergovernmental committee. Both parties want to
harmonize the regulatory basis,” he said.

According to him, a new agreement should take into account the
provisions of the deal signed in January of this year by the National
JSC Naftogaz Ukrainy and OJSC Gazprom.

At the same time, the minister reminded that they has earlier agreed
to analyze and update the existing gas accords, noting that there are
many obsolete and ineffective provisions in these agreements.

As reported, Russian and Ukrainian premiers, Vladimir Putin and
Yulia Tymoshenko are scheduled to meet in Kharkiv in October to chair a
meeting of the bilateral committee on economic cooperation.
