Deputy Head of Presidential Administration of Ukraine Andriy Honcharuk and State Secretary of Defense of Germany Christian Schmidt have discussed the upcoming visit of Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych to Germany.

The two officials also discussed cooperation between Germany and Ukraine, NATO and the EU, as well as Ukraine’s non-aligned status, the presidential press service reported on Wednesday.

Honcharuk noted that during Yanukovych’s visit, a number of economic, military, humanitarian and environmental issues would be discussed, and a series of documents related to these issues would be signed.

In turn, Schmidt noted that the new Ukrainian government has clearly demonstrated its willingness to continue cooperation in national security and defense not only with the European Union, but also with NATO.

If during his visit to Germany Yanukovych outlines Ukraine’s position regarding the continued rapprochement with the European Union and collective responsibility in security area, including NATO, it will be an important step for the image of the Ukraine, Schmidt said. This is a good opportunity to clearly define the position of the state, he added.

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry reported earlier that Yanukovych is scheduled to visit Germany on August 30.
