Ukraine is celebrating the 22nd anniversary of its independence.
The official celebration began at 09:30 with ceremonial of laying of flowers at monuments to prominent figures of the Ukrainian state – Taras Shevchenko and Mykhailo Hrushevskyi in Kyiv – which was attended by President Viktor Yanukovych, Parliament Speaker Volodymyr Rybak, and other officials.
At 10:00, Yanukovych, Rybak, and others attended a prayer for Ukraine near the monument to Vladimir the Great.
A variety of competitions, contests, and concerts will be held on Khreschatyk Street.
