You're reading: Uncle Sam's branching out into fast food

The development of the fast food sector in Kiev keeps on accelerating: this week [BUT WHEN EXACTLY???] a forty-seat American-style fast food restaurant, Stop, opens near Druzhba Narodiv metro station.

The menu will feature four-ounce hamburgers, hot dogs, steaks, fish and chicken sandwiches, french fries and chicken nuggets. Take out will be available. The Stop project is the brainchild of the owners of Uncle Sam's restaurant, which has been open in Kiev since June 21, 1996, and USU, a Maryland-based corporation. The partners plan to open another two or three similar restaurants by the end of the year.

Stop will be more affordable that the Uncle Sam's mid-scale restaurant, according to owner Michael Don. Despite the added cost of import duties (all products are imported from the US) a sandwich, fries and a drink-should cost between 6 and 8 hryvnas.

Initial opening hours will be from 9am to 10pm. Every other soft drink will be free for the first month, and in keeping with the practice of many American fast-food restaurants, smoking and alcoholic beverages will be prohibited. 'We want to see families there,' said Don.
