You're reading: U.S. citizen wanted by U.S. police for child sex abuse arrested in Kyiv region

Kyiv, Dec. 15 (Interfax-Ukraine) - Ukrainian police arrested a U.S. citizen, Stephen Bruce Unger Jr., wanted by the U.S. authorities for child sex abuse, in the town of Boyarka in Kyiv region on Saturday, Dec. 13.

The press center of the Ukrainian Interior Ministry’s organized crime unit told Interfax-Ukraine that the U.S. citizen lived in Kyiv region, rented a private house and gave English language courses at a local school.

The press service said that following reports in the media of Unger being on the wanted list, local residents said that a man resembling the suspect was teaching language courses in one of the schools in Boyarka, but under another name.

The police set up a meeting with Unger at a cafe in the town under the pretext of offering translation work.

When the police asked him to provide travel documents, he said he had lost them. He was then detained.

The Ukrainian Interior Ministry has not yet obtained any reports of the suspect committing crimes in Ukraine.

As reported, Unger was a soccer coach at an elementary school in Texas. According to the organized crime unit, he crossed the Ukrainian border in late 2007. He is now on the international wanted list.
