The United States welcomes the dismissal of Ukrainian Prosecutor Viktor Shokin and says it is important to appoint a new chief prosecutor who will reform the prosecution system, U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Geoffrey Pyatt has said.

“The important thing now is to identify a new prosecutor general, the person who really is committed to reforms,” he said at public debates titled “The U.S. for Ukraine: Partner, Patron or Ally?” arranged by Institute of World Policy in Kyiv on Mach 29.

According to the ambassador, no matter how much assistance, money or technical support is provided by the international community to Ukraine, its challenge is to fight corruption. He said this is why it was so important to dismiss the discredited prosecutor general.

Pyatt says that it is important that a new chief prosecutor should be an independent professional, enjoy support of civil society in Ukraine and be committed to Maidan principles.

What is more, he should build the public’s trust in the prosecution system.

On Tuesday, some 289 MPs in Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada gave passed a measure supporting the dismissal of Prosecutor General Viktor Shokin.
