The U.S. Department of State is concerned with “emergence of a model of targeted violence and intimidation of activists and journalists who took part and covered EuroMaidan protests” in Ukraine, reads a statement from the U.S. Department of State published on Thursday, December 26, as Voice of America informs.
“Special concern is caused due to the brutal beating of journalist Tetyana Chornovol,” the statement follows.
The United States appealed to the government of Ukraine to “adhere to its obligations according to the OSCE and make sure that human rights, including the fundamental rights of freedom of speech and peaceful assembly, the rule of law and other democratic principles are respected.”
“We would like to urge the government of Ukraine to provide a definite signal that it is not going to tolerate violence against the critics of the government and those who work in order to create a modern, democratic and prosperous Ukraine. The United States together with our European partners will continue to carefully observe investigations of this and other cases,” the statement of the U.S. Department concluded.
