U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Thomas Melia (Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor) is visiting Kyiv for a series of meetings January 20-21 to build on the Rule of Law Working Group meetings that were held last November and to prepare for the Strategic Partnership Commission meetings in Washington in February.

The U.S. Embassy in Kyiv on Jan. 20 said Melia will be meeting with a variety of leaders from government, parliament, opposition parties, the business community, and civil society.

"Melia’s meetings with Government of Ukraine will include visits to the Presidential Administration and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. His conversations will focus on rule of law, media freedom, electoral reform, and human rights, among other issues," an embassy spokeman said.
