The Venice Commission will address amendments to the legislation on Ukraine's presidential elections at its October 9 meeting.
Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada First Vice-Speaker Oleksandr Lavrynovych met on Wednesday with the Council of Europe Secretary General’s Representative in Ukraine Ake Peterson and OSCE project coordinator in Ukraine Lubomir Kopaj, the vice-speaker’s press service reported.
Peterson handed Lavrynovych an official invitation to take part in the Venice Commission meeting on October 9, which will address at an expert level the changes to Ukraine’s legislation on presidential elections.
The election legislation has been a principal topic of discussion at the meeting. The sides exchanged opinions concerning the international practice of implementation of the electoral law in terms of guaranteeing citizens’ right to vote and to be elected.
The European Commission for Democracy through Law, better known as the Venice Commission, is the Council of Europe’s advisory body on constitutional matters.
