A mystery Ukrainian billionaire is in talks with shareholders hoping to make an audacious bid to save the troubled Unity mine.
They are hoping the businessman will invest in the site which needs cash to buy new equipment so operations can get back under way.
A source close to minority shareholders said: “We have this Ukrainian oligarch who has a FTSE 100 company.
“He is one of Europe’s youngest billionaires.
“He is in the coal industry which is what we want. Subject to him saying yes to backing financially, we are going to try to make a bid for the company and buy the assets.”
