Legacy of Merthyr industrialist to be honoured in Ukraine – where he founded a city which is now home to more than 950,000 people.

He was a humble Welsh businessman and engineer who left an enduring
contribution to a country more than 2,000 miles away from his homeland.

Now
the legacy of Merthyr industrialist John James Hughes is to be the
centre of a series of celebrations in the unlikely setting of Ukraine –
where he founded a city which is now home to more than 950,000 people.

The
Ukrainian Parliament has rubber-stamped a resolution to open a national
John Hughes museum in the industrial city of Donetsk, originally called
Hughesovka, as well as issue a commemorative stamp to appear in time
for the 200th anniversary of his birth next year.
