LONDON - The Pentagon has appointed a retired four-star U.S. Army general who once led American military operations in the Middle East as an official special adviser to Ukraine's Defense Ministry, a move that comes as Kyiv partners with Washington to retool its armed forces.
U.S. Secretary of Defense Ash Carter appointed retired Gen. John Abizaid, the former commander of U.S. Central Command, as senior defense adviser to Ukraine. The announcement followed Mr. Carter’s meeting with Ukrainian Defense Minister Stepan Poltorak in London.
