Regions Party leader Viktor Yanukovych has accused the coalition of being reluctant to increase social welfare payments.

“Changing the mode of voting on this law [on a rise in social
benefits] directly indicates that MPs don’t want to pass a Ukrainian
law on increasing pensions and wages,” he said at a briefing on Tuesday.

Yanukovych said that the coalition’s reluctance to adopt this law
“automatically means that these higher social standards won’t be
included in the 2010 budget.”

He said that according to the Budget Code, the Verkhovna Rada is to
approve social standards before adopting a law on the state budget for
next year.

“Today we saw that the coalition’s intention to change the mode of
voting is a technique used by parliamentary fakirs to avoid a possible
vote on a rise in pensions and wages. We’ll defend our position until
MPs understand that Ukrainian laws should be implemented,” Yanukovych
said.
