You're reading: Yanukovych establishes Coordinating Council for Development of Civil Society in Ukraine

Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has signed a decree to establish the Coordinating Council for the Development of Civil Society, a subsidiary agency under the president, the official Web site of the head of state reported.

The president appointed his adviser – Head of the Main Department for Constitutional and Legal Modernization at the Presidential Administration Maryna Stavniychuk as head of the Coordinating Council.

According to the decree, the Coordinating Council has been established to facilitate the president’s activities on the implementation of public policies aimed at creating favorable environment for the further development of civil society in Ukraine, develop an effective mechanism of interaction of its institutions with government agencies and local authorities on the principles of partnership and mutual responsibility, to achieve European standards of security and protection of human rights and civil liberties, in compliance with Part 2 of Article 102, paragraph 28 of Part 1 of Article 106 of the Constitution of Ukraine.

The president signed relevant decree No 32/2012 on the matters of civil society development in Ukraine and it came into effect on Wednesday, Jan. 25.

According to the decree, the Coordinating Council is to prepare and submit within one month drafts of the strategy of the government policy for the development of civil society in Ukraine and a plan of priority measures on its implementation.

The decree also instructed the National Institute for Strategic Studies engaging representatives of civil society institutions to prepare a report on the state of civil society in Ukraine through summarizing the results of research in this area and submit it within a month to the Coordinating Council.
