You're reading: Yanukovych: Kurenivka tragedy should be a lesson to all officials

Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has said that the Kurenivka mudslide tragedy in Kyiv should be a lesson to everybody, and first and foremost, officials.

Yanukovych said that March 13, 2011 was the 50th anniversary of the mudslide in the Kurenivka district in Kyiv.

"Hundreds of residents of Kyiv were killed at that time, and many homes, industrial and cultural facilities were destroyed and flooded. The main cause of the tragedy was the neglect of public safety by the former government. Today, for the first time at the state level, we honor the victims of the Kurenivka disaster," reads the address.

"I believe that this tragic event in the history of our nation should be thoroughly investigated, and the public should get complete and truthful information about it. The Kurenivka tragedy should be a lesson to all of us, first and foremost, those vested with power. We must always remember that while resolving the tasks of nation-building, in first place should always be the people, their lives, health and well-being," he said.

Yanukovych also expressed his condolences to all those who lost their loved ones during the Kurenivka mudslide disaster on March 13, 1961.
