Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has proposed creating a branch of a Ukrainian research institute in Brunei in order to resolve flooding problems in the country.

An Interfax-Ukraine reporter said that Yanukovych, who is on a state visit to Brunei, had told this to the faculty of the University of Brunei Darussalam on Wednesday.

He described as important cooperation between the two countries in education and science, and proposed signing a protocol to set out the priorities for such cooperation.

"We are ready to help your as friends and, for example, found a branch of a Ukrainian research institute, which would have started working on an urgent global problem in Brunei – the flooding of some areas," he said.

Speaking about cooperation in education, Yanukovych said that the Ukrainian side was ready to begin drafting such a protocol.

He also said that the work of a teacher was familiar to him.

"I dedicated a lot of time to my work as head of a department at the Academy of Public Administration. I founded one of the specialties – investment planning management," he said.

Yanukovych also said that he had very often delivered lectures to students, rarely using notes.
