You're reading: Yatseniuk: Ukrainian people should decide on constitutional amendments at referendum

Kyiv, August 28 (Interfax-Ukraine) - Leader of NGO Front of Changes Arseniy Yatseniuk has said that Ukrainian citizens should decide at a referendum whether they should amend the country's constitution or not.

“We’re launching the process of this constitutional referendum that includes three clauses. Firstly, constitutional amendments should be based on a decision taken by the Ukrainian people. Secondly, state institutions should be banned from extending their powers. And thirdly, the people’s will should be implemented,” he said at a briefing in Donetsk on Friday, the Front of Changes’ press service reported.

“This is a political scheme. The result is important for me. The result is three million signatures put to support the holding of a referendum and the announcement of a Ukrainian referendum on defending the main law,” Yatseniuk said.

He said that three months ago, the Bloc of Yulia Tymoshenko and the Regions Party had actually reached agreement to amend the Constitution of Ukraine.
