LVIV – Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko has urged the Ukrainian people to support book publishing in Ukraine.

“I urge all citizens of Ukraine and all influential people to assist Ukrainian book publishing by buying Ukrainian books,” the president said at the 16th International Forum of Book Publishers in Lviv on Thursday.

According to him, book publishing in Ukraine is being developed despite opposition from the authorities.

“Book publishing is being developed in spite of the authorities, as every decree that I sign in support of the Ukrainian book publishing faces great resistance from officials. Last year, UAH 28 million was allocated to Ukrainian publishing, while this year the planned amount was doubled, and UAH 1.2 million has currently been spent. It is shameful to have to name such a sum,” the president said.

According to Yushchenko, Ukrainian book publishing needs serious support from the state, in particular, regarding increasing the number bookshops and granting tax breaks to book publishers.
