Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko has asked Prosecutor General Oleksandr Medvedko to investigate the murder of Serhiy Mruk, the prosecutor of Tarascha district of Kyiv region, as soon as possible.
Iryna Vannykova, the president’s press secretary, said at a briefing in Kyiv on Tuesday that the president had sent a letter on the subject to the Prosecutor General’s Office.
“Commenting on this crime, President Yushchenko said that the insolence of the murder of a prosecutor at their place of work, the obvious disrespect for the law and its representatives should be considered by the investigation as an additional challenge and stimulus to find and punish the criminals as soon as possible,” she said.
Vannykova said “a feeling of personal impunity pushes criminals to unprecedented steps.”
“I consider it a duty and a matter of honor for the law enforcement agencies to demonstrate that the response of the law can be instant and definite,” Vannykova cited words of the president.
As reported, on Sunday evening Serhiy Mruk, the prosecutor of Tarascha district of Kyiv region, was found shot dead in his office.
