The Council of Europe should preserve its leading role in the field of democracy, the protection of human rights and the supremacy of law, Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko has said.
He made this statement at a meeting with members of the Verkhovna
Rada delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe
(PACE) in Kyiv on Friday, the presidential press service reported.
“We support the Council of Europe’s leading role as a unique
European political forum, which should preserve its leading role in the
system of European institutions of democracy, human rights protection
and the supremacy of law,” Yuschenko said.
The meeting participants discussed the most important issues for
Ukraine on the agenda of the PACE session, which will take place in
September 28 through October 2. In particular, they spoke about the
elections of the PACE secretary general, the debates on the Council of
Europe’s future, and tackling climate change, among other issues.
