Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko has said he is afraid that Gazprom could fine Ukraine UAH 41.9 billion for buying less gas than planned.
“The sanctions that could be imposed by Gazprom on Ukraine, in line with the signed agreement, for buying less gas than planned [for the first half of 2009], have already been estimated at UAH 41.9 billion,” he said at a meeting with regional governors in Kyiv on Thursday.
He said that even if Ukraine pays for gas in full and on time, “the process of gas delivery to Ukraine will depend completely on nontransparent agreements.”
The official hryvnia exchange rate for September 4 is UAH 7.9850/$1.
