Ukrainian President Viktor Yuschenko has called on government to provide the necessary financing for the construction of bridges across the Dnipro in Zaporizhia, the presidential press service has reported.

“The government has to allocate UAH 500 million from the budget for 2009 to finance this construction without a fuss, without advertisement, and without billboards,” the president said while visiting the construction site on Friday, the presidential press service reported.

A relevant request by the Ukrainian president will be submitted to the government in the near future, the president said.

Yuschenko said the bridges are of strategic national importance, that’s why the government should act responsibly, in contrast to the indifference shown today by the ministries responsible for highway construction.

A total of UAH 350 million of the necessary UAH 600 million was allocated from the state budget for the construction of the bridges in 2008, while in 2009 only UAH 100 is to be allocated from the state budget of the necessary UAH 600 million. The financing for 2010 is estimated at UAH 750 for construction work in 2010.

According to the project, the length of the bridge highway is 9.1 kilometers. The construction of two bridges across Dnipro River is foreseen: a 660-meter long suspension bridge across Dnipro River and a 40-meter long arch metal bridge across Stary Dnipro River.
