Non-Ukrainian forces are striving to grab power in Ukraine, Ukrainian President Victor Yushchenko said at a grand meeting in Kyiv on Saturday on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the creation of the People's Movement of Ukraine (Rukh).

In his words, this is one of the most serious challenges today.

“I don’t want the Ukrainian patriots to regain their sight when it’s too late,” he said. “All our achievements, our language and culture, our European prospects are under threat,” the presidential press service quotes President Yushchenko as saying.

As he put it, the chaos in the state is the way of the existence of the political forces in power and in the opposition.

Thus, Yuschenko called on Ukrainians to support the constitutional reform put forth by him, and the nation-wide discussion of a draft Constitution of Ukraine, which will open new prospects for the nation. “I take the responsibility to call on the entire Ukraine to create a public movement to support the Ukrainian nation,” he said.

Highlighting the history of the Rukh’s foundation, the president said that at the decisive historical moment, the Rukh realized the Ukrainian nation’s thousand-year aspirations. “The great, nation-wide, social, not divided into parties and groups yet – the People’s Movement of Ukraine, backed up by millions of Ukrainians, is the actual farther of our statehood,” he said.

The president urged Rukh supporters on patriotism that would unite them today, when many profiteer in the name of the People’s Rukh, its founders and leaders both in the interests of personal benefits and with the aim to discredit the national and democratic values.
