Ukrainian President Viktor Yuschenko has opened a memorial of victims of the communist reprisals in Demianiv Laz in Ivano-Frankivsk region.
The opening of the memorial took place at about 13:00 with the participation of representatives of the authorities – the Ivano-Frankivsk city council and the Ivano-Frankivsk regional state administration.

Yulian Kuibida, the director of the museum, said 524 people were re-buried on 29 October 1989.
“Three [common] graves were discovered during archeological dig on 21 September 1989. In one of the them there were 212 people, 204 people in the second grave, and 108 people in the third one,” said Roman Krutsyk, the initiator of the excavations.
The construction of the memorial was funded from the regional council.
The cost of the memorial is over UAH 300,000.

In August 2009, President Viktor Yuschenko proposed the Verkhovna Rada to recognize children of victims of reprisals as victims of the political reprisals.
