Ukrainian President Victor Yushchenko believes that the it is of current importance to develop a new corvette for the Ukrainian Navy.
The head of state said this during the tactical exercises of Ukraine’s Naval Forces held in Crimea last week.
“The development of a modern corvette for the Ukrainian Navy is a
pressing issue,” the Defense Ministry’s press service quoted the
president as saying.
“A modern corvette will be designed exclusively by Ukraine,
assembled at Ukrainian shipyards. Only the weapons systems will be
developed jointly with foreign companies,” Yushchenko said.
The design works are to finish this December. The next year’s budget
should include funds for the construction of four such ships.
The Ukrainian navy’s need in corvettes is estimated at ten, the foreign demand at 300.
