Ukraine should have a united Orthodox Church, President Viktor Yuschenko has said in the Independence Day address to the nation on Monday.

“The government adheres to the national idea and the restoration of historical truth,” he said.

“A boost to the unification of the Orthodox Church has been given in
Ukraine. I use this occasion to appeal to Ukrainian clerics: you must
start inter-church dialog, this is your duty. Remember that Ukraine
needs spiritual unity as a breath of fresh air,” the president said.
