New York, September 24 (Interfax-Ukraine) - Ukraine is planning to become a member of the UN Security Council in 2016-2017, Ukrainian President Victor Yushchenko has said.
The president was speaking at the 64th UN General Assembly’s annual debate in New York on September 23.
“Today I have an honor to confirm Ukraine’s plans to become a member of the UN Security Council in 2016-2017,” he said.
Ukraine has been and will always be the United Nation’s partner in security issues, the president said.
In his words, Ukraine is currently acting in compliance with the aims and principles of the United Nations and is expecting similar attitude from its partners and neighbors.
The United Nations Security Council is one of the principal organs of the United Nations and is charged with the maintenance of international peace and security. There are 15 members of the Security Council, consisting of five veto-wielding permanent members (China, France, Russia, United Kingdom, United States) and ten elected non-permanent member, which are elected by the General Assembly for two-year terms starting on 1 January, with five replaced each year. The members are chosen by regional groups and confirmed by the United Nations General Assembly.
