Ukraine's presidential secretariat has appealed against a Kyiv District Administrative Court decision that obliges Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko to call a nationwide referendum on the country's accession to NATO and its participation in the common economic space.

Deputy head of the presidential secretariat Maryna Stavniychuk said this at a press conference in Kyiv on Friday.

“This decision is being challenged in an appeals court. We hope that
the court will consider this issue soon, because we have strong
arguments concerning the unlawfulness of the [previous] court decision
and we will prove our case,” she said.

On July 2, Kyiv District Administrative Court sustained a suit by
the ex-head of Ukraine’s presidential administration Viktor Medvedchuk
and recognized as unlawful and illegal the current president’s
inactivity in calling a nationwide referendum on the country’s
accession to NATO and its participation in the common economic space.
The court obliged the president to call such a referendum through
issuing a relevant decree.
