Ukrainians in January 2015 officially bought $19.4 million more foreign currency than sold, which is 2.4 times less than in December last year.

According to the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU), in January Ukrainians sold foreign currency worth $89.6 million and bought $109 million.

At the same time, the outflow of individuals’ deposits in freely convertible currency from banks in January slowed down: $499.7 million against $503.8 million in December last year. The outflow has continued for the 16th consecutive month.

As reported, after the introduction of administrative restrictions and the emergence of “currency multi-rates” in autumn 2014, the volume of cash currency on the black market in Ukraine grew significantly, while official market volume fell. The National Bank rejected the indicative exchange rate in favor of the transfer to the market rate from Feb. 5, 2015.

According to NBU statistics, Ukrainians bought $2.41 billion more foreign currency than was sold in 2014.
