You're reading: Microsoft at Ukraine’s defense front

The Ukrainian unit of Microsoft is front and center in the government’s fight against cyber attacks, taking up the cyberspace flank.

Most recently,
CEO Nadiya Vasylieva signed a cooperation memorandum on April 1 with the
Interior Ministry to develop the government’s cyber security and communication.
Its 350,000 employees and various internal reporting systems are disconnected
from each other, she said.

“That’s what we
want to help with – centralize it, unite the infrastructure, and make
information closed for third parties and secure within the ministry,” she said.

Vasylieva noted that
cooperation occurs in the form of consultations on system integration, rather
than providing software.

The agreement
follows a December deal with an agency under the Security Service of Ukraine,
known as the SBU, to cooperate on information security in data networks.

The Government
Security Program, signed with the State Service for Special Communication and
Information Protection of the SBU, is only the second of its kind for Microsoft
in Europe. Besides data security, it manages communications between state
bodies.
