 Ukraine's government condemned referendums in eastern Ukraine, where voters overwhelmingly supported self-rule, as a "farce" on May 12, as Russia again called on Kyiv to hold talks with the pro-Moscow breakaway regions. Ninety percent of voters in an industrial area in eastern Ukraine came out in favor of sovereignty May 11, pro-Russian groups said as they announced preliminary results of the two votes. The results could be followed by new referendum to join Russia, or push for further autonomy.
